Why Silk Board always have heavy traffic?
I'm here in Bangalore for last 2+ years. I have traveled in this route several times. Last month I had the chance to travel on this route frequently. I was able to memorize In which place I might get stuck.
I was interested to see what causes these traffic. Also, after crossing the bus stop the road will be free. I used to think the bus drivers are the culprit. That's partially true. But will have a look at the maps to understand it better.
Silk Board Traffic (Towards Hosur)

In this map we can clearly see the traffic flow.
Vehicles flow:
Flow 1: Vehicles coming from silk board flyover.
Flow 2: Vehicles coming from double decor flyover.
Flow 3: Vehicles coming from ORR to Hosur service road.
There are two roads here. 1.Highway, 2.Service road. There is one bus stop here Silkboard bus stop towards Hosur.
Traffic issue:
-
Flow(2 and 3) from Hosur service road merge Highway. To take e-city flyover
-
Flow(1) from silk board flyover buses stops at bus stop in Highway.(Sometimes occupying all 3 lanes)
Fix: Re-design of Lanes
I was in full confidence this would be easy to fix. I was wrong. A lot happing here. Especially with buses. They occupy most of lanes at peak hours in a un organized way. Then the traffic merges. All happens in a very close proximity. Thus resulting in heavy traffic.
Surely I'm not a expert in designing roads. Still this was fun to do. Any discussion on this is welcomed (email: [email protected]).

Silk Board double decor Flyover
I don't know why it was chosen to have the exit from Silk Board double decor Flyover to Service road. We have 3 Lanes in highway. So it makes more sense to have the traffic to join in Highway.
Exit from Highway to Service road
Currently this is a entry for Highway. This where the problem starts. Since the busses just stop after this opening. It will be a bad idea to have this as entry. So I have made it as exit. So the busses which stops after this opening in highway is not blocking one flow of traffic.
Bus stop
There are two types of buses Stop here. 1. City Buses , 2. Omni Buses. First thing we have to regulate them. we shouldn't allow then to occupy more than one lane. Some buses stop for more time that should also be regulated. clean lane marking and a person to monitor will fix this.
As I told there are two types of buses stops here. Omni Buses need more time to onboard passengers than City buses. Also city buses doesn't need to use the highway. They can be directed to use the service road instead of Silk Board Flyover from Madiwala. This will give some relief to Highway traffic because city buses doesn't use e-city flyover.
Since the bus top has some extra area apart from highway. we can utilize that space to have this two bus stops.
Entry to E-city Flyover from Service road
After bus stop in service road. We can have a entry to the e-city Flyover. Right now in that place we have Highway, Service road and e-city flyover begins.
To make it simple. we have to merge the 1 lane of highway to the service road. Also making it one way is necessary. In this process the service road becomes the Highway. The Highway becomes entry to e-city flyover.
May be this is not the best design but I believe this will keep the traffic flowing and not completely get stuck. Hope someone will do a better job than me and also make the change in real.
